Trama

New York, Andy Hanson, dirigente immobiliare disperatamente in cerca di
denaro, convince il fragile e disperato fratello minore Hank, divorziato e, a causa dei suoi debiti, costantemente in
arretrato con gli alimenti e con le rate scolastiche della figlia, a rapinare la gioielleria di proprietà dei
genitori a Westchester; Andy progetta il colpo ma non può occuparsene personalmente in quanto conosciuto nella zona e
delega il fratello a compiere la rapina ma egli, incapace di compiere azioni delittuose, all'insaputa di Andy assolda
Bobby, un delinquente che eseguirà il colpo al suo posto.
La rapina avrebbe dovuto essere rapida e senza
spargimento di sangue ma Bobby viene colpito da un colpo di pistola sparato da Nanette, l'anziana madre di Andy e Hank,
che sostituiva la commessa che avrebbe dovuto trovarsi nella gioielleria in quel momento; nella sparatoria che ne segue
Bobby viene ucciso mentre la madre finisce in coma. Il padre Charles non si dà pace e cerca inutilmente giustizia
presso la polizia e successivamente, vista l'impossibilità di riprendersi della moglie, prende la tragica decisione
di staccare la spina alla macchina che tiene in vita Nanette.
I due fratelli cercano di gestire la complicata
situazione che è venuta a crearsi: Andy, eroinomane, in crisi nel lavoro e tradito dalla bella moglie Gina, che da
tempo ha una relazione con suo fratello Hank, si rifugia nella droga, tentando di sfuggire ai problemi che emergono nel
suo ufficio, fatture false e denaro sparito, mentre Hank viene avvicinato da Dex e Chris, rispettivamente cognato e
moglie di Bobby, che avendo lei visto Hank in casa sua lo ha collegato alla morte del marito ed i due intendono
ricattarlo.
Da quel momento gli eventi precipitano: Andy si reca dal suo spacciatore insieme ad Hank e lo uccide
rubando il suo denaro contenuto in una cassaforte, uccidendo anche un suo cliente addormentato sul letto, per pagare il
ricattatore ma, una volta giunti nella sua casa, Andy uccide anche lui e, mentre sta per uccidere anche Chris, viene
fermato da Hank che lo supplica di non ucciderla ma Andy, ormai fuori controllo, punta la pistola verso il fratello con
l'intenzione di non lasciare testimoni ma, un attimo prima di premere il grilletto, viene colpito dalla donna con la
pistola di Dex.

Plot

Andy Hanson (Hoffman) is a finance
executive who, facing an upcoming audit, is in desperate need of money to cover funds he embezzled from his employer.
His brother Hank (Hawke) needs money to pay child support and his daughter's private school tuition. Meanwhile, Hank has
been having a long-standing affair with Andy's wife, Gina (Marisa Tomei), who has been unsatisfied with her marriage.
Andy devises a plan to rob their parents' jewelry store, to which Hank reluctantly agrees. Andy argues that he cannot
go himself because he has been in the neighborhood recently, and could therefore be recognized. They assume that only
Doris, an elderly woman who works for their parents, will be in the store. Andy states that just a toy gun is needed and
that it is a victimless crime, because insurance will repay their parents for the stolen items. Andy plans to fence the
jewelry via a New York City dealer his father knows, and expects to net about $120,000 from the robbery.
Without
consulting Andy, Hank hires Bobby Lasorda (Brian F. O'Byrne), an acquaintance who is an experienced thief, to help him
in the robbery. Bobby reveals a real gun and decides he will commit the robbery himself; Hank just needs to wait in the
car. Unbeknown to the robbers, the brothers' mother Nanette (Rosemary Harris) happens to be filling in for Doris. The
robbery goes awry when Nanette pulls a hidden gun on Bobby, causing a shootout; Bobby dies on the scene, and Nanette
falls into a coma, dying a week later in the hospital after her husband Charles (Finney) agrees to take her off life
support. Charles, unsatisfied with the police's help, decides to investigate on his own, and he becomes obsessed with
finding information about the crime and others involved in it.
Shortly after the botched robbery, Hank is
confronted by Bobby's brother-in-law Dex (Michael Shannon) who demands financial compensation for Bobby's death to
provide for his sister, Chris (Aleksa Palladino), Bobby's widow.
Meanwhile, while Andy is away from his office
dealing with his mother's death, his superiors at work repeatedly try to contact him regarding irregularities in his
department's accounts that have been revealed by the audit. At the wake for Nanette, Andy and Charles have a complex and
emotional exchange, wherein Charles states he loves Andy despite their long-standing differences; Andy says he has
always felt like an outsider in his father's house. When Andy questions his biological heritage, Charles slaps him. Andy
and Gina immediately depart, and on the drive home Andy has an emotional breakdown over his relationship with his
father. Later, at home, Gina tells Andy his boss has been trying to get in touch with him, and expresses her frustration
with their marriage and Andy's growing coldness. Andy, preoccupied with covering up his embezzlement and trying to help
Hank deal with Dex's blackmail, hardly reacts when Gina announces she is leaving him. Her desperate attempt to extract
an emotional response from him – revealing her affair with Hank – fails, and she leaves.
Charles,
searching for information about the robbery, visits the same fence Andy had contacted in New York City. After an
acrimonious exchange that indicates Charles and the jeweler have known and disliked each other for decades, the jeweler
hands Andy's business card to Charles, revealing to Charles that Andy recently came to him looking to fence some jewels.
Charles immediately goes looking for Andy.

Cosa saremmo disposti a fare per denaro? Sidney Lumet ci da la sua
risposta in questo, abbastanza recente, thriller. Due fratelli insidiati dai debiti che per procurarsi denaro sono
disposti ad organizzare una rapina alla gioielleria di famiglia e, come in ogni thiller che si rispetti, ci scappa il
morto, ma il morto è la madre del ragazzo.
I 2, oltre che costretti ad affrontare i sensi di colpa, devono
fronteggiasre una situazione che, all'inizio, sembra contenibile, ma, man mano che si va avanti diventa sempre piu
sfuggevole catapultandoli in un giro vizioso dal quale è sempre piu difficil uscirne.
Un verosimile ritratto di
una occidentale famiglia moderna con figli viziati e abituati ad ottenere tutto quello che vogliono ma, una volta con le
spalle al muro, sono disposti a tutto per denaro, addirittura a rapinare i propri genitori.
